An insular territory of the United States of America, the U.S. Virgin Islands are the easiest overseas territory to visit for Americans. That's why they are so popular among U.S. nationals. Here's Buzzle's brief guide to plan a trip to this Caribbean paradise.

Geographically located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser
Antilles, the Virgin Islands archipelago is a group of some 100 hilly
islands, rising over clear, blue waters of the ocean. Many of these
islands are very small and remote, and well, virtually uninhabited. One
part of this archipelago is owned by Great Britain and the other by the
United States. In fact, the U.S. owns the three major and most famous
islands of the archipelago―St. Thomas, the most commercialized of the
three; St. John, the greenest of the three; and St. Croix, the
off-the-beaten-path island―alongside the Water Island, which became the
part of U.S. Virgin Islands in 1996, and several other minor islands.
The U.S. Virgin islands feature some of the most popular scuba diving
sites, apart from scenic beauty, and several cultural and historical
attractions.

Being American territories, U.S. nationals do not require a
passport to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, owing to which it is
among the most favorite vacation destinations of Americans. However, it
is interesting to note that the West Indian culture still holds a very
strong influence on the islands, and it is reflected through the local
traditions, lifestyle, and cuisine. If visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands
is on your wish list this vacation season, here are a few tips to help
you plan your trip.
When to Visit
✦ The peak season to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands falls between mid-December to the end of April. This is the winter season, but because these are tropical islands, it does not get very cold. Moreover, it rarely rains during this time, and so it is the best time for people wanting to indulge in outdoor activities.
✦ The months just before and after the peak season―November, early December, and May―form the shoulder season. The weather in these months is pretty pleasant, and the islands are not very crowded as well. Those not wanting to compromise much with the climate, but wanting to escape heavy crowds, can opt to visit during the shoulder season.
✦ The rest of the year comprises the off-season. August to October are the wettest months; however, by the beginning of November, the rains start dissipating. The peak of the hurricane season is in the months of August and September.
✦ If you wish to visit during the peak season, you will have to book well in advance so as to get the best possible bargains on hotels and airfares. It should, however, be noted that the islands are crowded with tourists during this time, and therefore, it might not be possible to get very cheap deals, and last-minute bargains may be virtually impossible to procure.
✦ Climate during the shoulder season is pleasant, as mentioned above, and it might be possible to find cheaper hotel deals during this time, owing to lesser tourists.
✦ If you are traveling on a tight budget and are ready to compromise a little with the climate, the off-season may be a perfect time for you to travel. You will not only be able to get really cheap airfares and accommodation deals, but you will also be able to enjoy the islands mostly for yourself.
Entry Requirements and Visas
✦ As mentioned above, U.S. nationals do not require a visa or even a passport to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
✦ Similarly, passports are not required for travelers from any of the United States territories as well. These include citizens of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Swains Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands.
✦ For all non-U.S. citizens, the entry requirements for the islands are the same as those for entry to the U.S.
How to Get There
✦ Several direct flights to St. Thomas and St. Croix operate from major American cities such as Miami, Boston, New York, Atlanta, Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, etc.
✦ Moreover, there are also several indirect flights to the two islands from San Juan in Puerto Rico.
✦ There are also ferry services on a seasonal basis to all the three islands from Puerto Rico, and on a regular basis from the British Virgin Islands.
✦ St. John does not have an airport but can be accessed via boat from St. Thomas.
Getting Around the Islands
✦ All the major U.S. Virgin Islands have regular and pretty inexpensive ferry services. The schedule keeps on changing from time to time; however, the updated schedule is regularly featured in the St Thomas/St John This Week magazine, which is available free-of-cost at all tourist centers and ticket offices.
✦ Private car rentals is also an option to get around the islands; however, there are several conditions for renting one. For one, you should be at least 21 years old to do so. Moreover, you should own a credit card and a valid driver's license.
✦ Most car rental companies have their desks at the St. Thomas and St. Croix airports, and so, if you wish to hire a car, you can try to find the best possible bargain by inquiring with a few different companies.
✦ You can also hire a motorcycle to get around the islands. It is needless to say that hiring a motorcycle is cheaper than hiring a car.
✦ You can also hire private taxis to commute around the islands. They will charge you per person one way, and so the fares might seem affordable for short distances. However, if you want to travel long distance, a private car rental may be more economical.
Managing the Budget
✦ If you are an American citizen, by opting to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, you have already cut down on some of the major costs incurred on long-distance vacations. No passports, no visa charges, free roaming on major service providers, no extra fees on currency exchange, and no sales tax. However, there are certain other budgeting issues which need to be handled.
✦ As far as the accommodation is concerned, while the islands, especially St. Thomas, have numerous high-end resorts, they also offer a number of budget options like budget hotels, hostels, guest houses, and B&Bs. Prices vary from island to island and are high during peak season.
✦ For the most cost-effective accommodation deal, opt for an all-inclusive package, that also covers your meals, activities, and other facilities, apart from lodging.
✦ There are several fine dining options available on the islands, offering some of the most elaborate menus. However, there are several cheaper options for budget travelers as well.
✦ In order to save money on food, eat early, take a heavy lunch, and opt for a light dinner (in most places, lunch is much cheaper than dinner, despite similarities in the menus).
✦ Regarding the beaches, it should be noted that the two most popular beaches viz., Magens Bay on St. Thomas, and Trunk Bay on St. John, have an entry fee. Moreover, owing to their popularity, they are also among the most crowded.
✦ However, there are several free beaches as well, such as the Sapphire Beach on St. Thomas, and the Cinnamon Bay on St. John. While these beaches offer more seclusion and calm than their more popular counterparts, the only expense here would be for renting snorkeling gear, beach games, and so on.
✦ There are many other free attractions in the U.S. Virgin Islands, such as the Virgin Islands National Park on St. John, which you can visit, and not only save money, but also make the most of your vacation.
Health and Safety
✦ Before traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands, you will require certain vaccinations, at least four to six weeks before the date of your departure. These include all the routine vaccines as prescribed by the WHO, and some more. For details on the immunizations required before traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands, visit the official website of the CDC.
✦ You will also require an appropriate travel insurance, which will cover for emergencies relating to health as well as most others.
✦ Furthermore, if you have been prescribed special medication by your doctor, ensure that you carry it with the doctor's prescription.
✦ It is good to know the generic name(s) of your medication, in case you need to buy them over-the-counter.
✦ Furthermore, carry all your travel documents, insurance papers, etc., as you may need to produce them in case of an emergency.
So, head to the U.S. Virgin Islands and make the most of your holiday. Only, remember to take some necessary safety measures. Petty crimes are on a rise, both in St. Thomas and St. John, and so, ensure that you keep your valuables safe, and avoid strolling alone at night.

A trip to the beach just isn't fun if you can't take your beloved pooch along. But fret not, as Buzzle brings you a list of the coolest pet-friendly beaches across the United States.
The time we spend lazing on the beach makes for some amazing
memories. And it only gets better when we have our pet in tow. All that
follows is a lot of splashing, playing, fetching, and rolling in the
sands.
Unfortunately, not all beaches permit dogs to enter the area. But there is no reason to worry, as we've made a list of the most amazing pet-friendly beaches in the country.
Best Pet-friendly Beaches in the US
Dog Beach, Ocean Beach, San Diego, California
Located in San Diego at the end of Voltaire Street, this stretch of the Ocean Beach is very canine friendly. It has a 24-hour leash-free zone for dogs at the north end of the beach, which also includes an exercise area. The beach was established in 1972, and prides itself to be one of the first official leash-free dog beaches in the United States.
Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina
This island includes 5000 acres of green cover, lined by some beautifully serene beaches. You can camp on the designated grounds with your leashed dog, or explore the park, or simply go frolicking on the beach. Off-limit areas for dogs include the pier and the cabins.
Nags Head, North Carolina
Nags Head is a long stretch of the seaside where you can take your leashed dog out on a walk. Dogs, however, are not allowed to enter any area designated for swimming. If you're coming from out of town, there are a lot of pet-friendly hotels in the vicinity, which will allow you and your pet to have a great holiday by the sea.
Fort De Soto Park Paw Playground, Tierra Verde, Florida
The Paw Playground here is your dog's idea of beach heaven. This fenced area has showers where your dogs can bathe, run over to the beach off-leashed, and pretty much indulge into all the madness that he wishes to. There is an entry charge of USD 5, but you may opt to buy an annual pass if you're planning to come here frequently.
Carmel Beach City Park, Carmel, California
No leashes here beyond the south of 10th Avenue! So your dog can roam about to its heart's content, roll in the sand, surf on the calm waters, and even take a swim if it fancies one. Another plus is that Carmel is quite a pet-friendly town, so finding accommodation for you and your pet will be a breeze. For golf fans, the Pebble Links course is just a stone's throw away.
Longport Dog Beach, Somers Point, New Jersey
Another leash-free beach, the Longport Dog Beach spells supreme fun for your dog. There aren't any special rules to follow, but you need to ensure that you carry waste disposal bags and clean up after your dog. Also, ensure that you carry adequate drinking water to keep your pooch hydrated, as you won't get it here on the beach.
Huntington Dog Beach, Huntington Beach, California
Huntington Beach has been voted as one of the most dog-friendly cities in the United States. With this title, it isn't a surprise to see the city's beach featured in the list. The seaside area is maintained by a non-profit organization called the Huntington Dog Beach, which accepts donations that go towards maintaining the beach. Your dog gets to roam and frolic leash-free, and also socialize with other canines.
Dog Beach, Picnic Island Park, Tampa, Florida
All dogs tend to have a natural aversion towards fences, so it is a welcome sight when they are let out to play in a partially fenced section on the beach. Now, the dog undoubtedly is happy with this arrangement, but you need to be careful and keep a constant eye on your pet while you're at the Dog Beach in the Picnic Island Park.
Anne's Beach, Islamorada, Florida Keys
This is a small and secluded beach which has shallow waters that are perfect for swimming, along with picnic tables. You can let your dog off the leash here, as long as he can be voice controlled effectively. Poop bags and freshwater bowls are available for your dog at the beach. There is also a deli close by if you wish to enjoy a picnic lunch here.
Brohard Paw Park and Beach, Venice, Florida
The Paw Park has special facilities for your pooch, including a dog shower, leash posts, and drinking water fountains. There is a fenced play area for dogs, which leads to the beach. Your pet needs to be restricted within this area. Other facilities provided include picnic tables and benches.
While an evening out on the beach with your beloved pet may sound perfect, please ensure that it does not pose a problem to your fellow beach-goers. Always ensure that your pet is under control, and never ventures out of the designated areas.

Loyalty to country ALWAYS. Loyalty to government, when it deserves it.
Mark Twain
Loyalty towards a nation, devotion to its prosperity, and pride for the honored can be inculcated in children optimally at school. The connection between the land and its men and women is the strongest there is - a connection for which people have fought, sacrificed, and killed. It is very important to know the history of your country and the men who shaped it. The patriotic places listed below are nothing but reminders of great battles, leaders, and heroes. These places take us closer to the land that today millions of global citizens call home - the land of the American dream. A superpower today, it was once just 13 British colonies across the Atlantic. A lot has happened between then and now, and these places are reminders of a few such happenings.
The places mentioned below are not listed according to their significance. Each place equally honors patriotism for the USA.

The Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania, is of high
symbolic value for Americans. It includes the Gettysburg National
Cemetery and most of the Gettysburg Battlefield. 3,500 Union soldiers
rest here. As most Americans know, this place saw the bloodiest battle
in the Civil War, with casualties rising above the 50,000 mark. The
place celebrated its 150th anniversary when it entered 2013. The
Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center displays several American Civil War
artifacts. Not to forget, it was this place that inspired President
Abraham Lincoln's unforgettable Gettysburg Address.
The Liberty Bell is not just famous in the United States, but all
over the world. It is truly an international symbol of freedom. The bell
was originally placed in the Independence Hall, and then in the
Independence Mall. Post the Second World War, the National Park Service
was given the custody of this prestigious symbol. The position of this
bell has always been a famous place for protests and rebellions. Even
today, it is used as a patriotic symbol on badges, flags, and even
clothes during the 4th of July celebrations.
The lettering on the bell reads - Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.

A gift of friendship from the people of France to those of the
United States, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World is an
international symbol that portrays democracy and freedom. Dedicated to
the entire nation by President Grover Cleveland on the 28th of October,
1886, it has since been synonymous with the image of America. A
neoclassical sculpture, it is situated on Liberty Island in Manhattan.
It is a National Monument - a perfect designation, given the national
sentiment it holds. It's been there for more than a hundred years, and
even today it holds an important place in every American's heart. The
statue represents Libertas, the Roman Goddess of Freedom. On the tablet
(tabula ansata) that the Goddess holds, is inscribed the date of the
American Declaration of Independence.
The National Mall and Memorial Parks are home to some of the
country's most significant structures. Presidential legacies, historic
events, and the country's commitment to freedom - all are perfectly
portrayed here. Some of the memorials that are situated here include the
African-American Civil War Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial,
World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial,
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and Thomas Jefferson Memorial. While
each of these memorials are significant in their own right, together
they make The Mall - a place where citizens remember great events,
military and civilian sacrifices, and contributions by great leaders.
The Lincoln Memorial is part of the National Mall but individually
ranks as one of the most patriotic places in America. The memorial is
home to a huge, seated structure of Abraham Lincoln in contemplation. It
also holds inscriptions of two famous speeches by the president - The
Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address. This was also the
site that witnessed the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, on
28th August, 1963, where Martin Luther King gave his inspirational I
Have a Dream speech. The 36 columns of the memorial represent the number
of states that existed at the time of the president's death.
The epitaph above the statue reads - "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever."

Just like the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore is internationally
famous for the sculptures of four presidents of the USA - George
Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
This national memorial educates visitors about American history, the
rich heritage of the land, and the diversity of the country today. In
the canyon behind the sculptures, are 16 enamel panels. These panels
include the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the
biographies of the four presidents, all in text. Also mentioned is the
biography of Gutzon Borglum, the man behind this patriotic project.
Home of the first president of America, Mount Vernon was where the
great George Washington resided. Today, visitors can see the president's
study and a few other rooms of this plantation home. This is where
George and Martha Washington lived; also the place where George
Washington breathed his last. It is thus this place where you can see
Washington's Tomb.
About this place, the man himself wrote - "I have no objection to any sober or orderly person's gratifying their curiosity in viewing the buildings, Gardens, &ca. about Mount Vernon."

The most famous cemetery in the country, the Arlington Cemetery in
Arlington County, Virginia, is the burial place of 300,000 veterans who
sacrificed their lives for their country. The cemetery was established
during the Civil War, and today is the resting place of veterans from
the Second World War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, amongst
others. It is divided into 70 sections; the 60th section is the resting
place of the personnel killed in the Global War on Terror since 2001.
Funerals of William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy have been held here.
There are several memorials on this site, including the USS Maine Mast
Memorial which marks 266 men who lost their lives aboard the USS Maine,
and the Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial that is placed in memory of
the crew on flight STS-51-L.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Independence Hall is the first
home of the Liberty Bell. It is here that the Declaration of
Independence and the US Constitution were debated and adopted. It is
here that the seeds of freedom and democracy were first sowed. Today, it
features on the US $100 bill and the bicentennial Kennedy half dollar.
Also, the picture of the Assembly Room is featured on the reverse of the
US $2 bill. Even though seeing the image of this patriotic place has
become an everyday event, an actual visit to it is held in high regard.
Founded in 1838 in New York, this cemetery turned 175 years old in
2013. This is where the Battle of Brooklyn was fought; it was the first
significant battle to be fought in the American Revolutionary War. The
cemetery has been granted the 'National Historic Landmark' status. It is
also home to many monuments, including a Civil War Memorial and a
statue of DeWitt Clinton. During the Civil War, the cemetery created a
place for free veterans' burial known as the Soldiers' Lot. Apart from
soldiers, it is also the resting place of several Americans who
contributed to the country's evolution - be it through art, education,
or even music.
We have come across these places often, on currency, in textbooks, and on television. However, a personal visit to these top 10 patriotic places will definitely bring you closer to the land you live in, the enriching ideals of the people who fought for the freedom of this land, and to the never-ending dream of democracy.
